You are a design engineer at Robotic Grippers Ind. a manufacturer of a variety of products.

A management review of the utilization of the wire bending equipment and plastic molding show excess capacity. It has been suggested that this excess capacity could be filled with a new product. A small wire or plastic paper clip that handles 20 to 30 sheets of paper without either tearing the paper or not securely holding the sheets.

It has been observed that the GEM 1 Paper Clip although cited as the classic paper clip has many flaws:

1. It goes on only one way.
2. It does not just slip on.
3. It does not always stay on.
4. It tears the paper.
5. It does not jold many papers well.
6. It bulks up stacks of papers.

Your task is to apply the product development principles to the creation of a new improved paper clip design that does not impinge on copyright requirements and satisfies customer needs.. It is expected that you will analyze at least three alternative designs.

Part A: (80%)

Please prepare a report that summarizes the results and attached to the report will be the necessary supporting documents.

Supporting documents include:

• Product Function List and requirements
• Use and possible misuse
• Criteria for selection
• 3 or 4 alternative designs with sketches. (in english and metric dimensions)
• Possible Process Flow Chart for best candidate
• Design matrix to determine the best candidate
• Fault Tree Analysis for the following two faults: Paper clip tears the paper (stacks of 20) and paper clip does not securely hold

Part B: (20%)

The Shakers, a religious group very active from 1830 to 1880, were known for their functional and simplistic furniture. One of their most famous pieces of furniture which they hand crafted and sold was a ladderback chair. The Chair design is still sold today as a reproduction. Develop the following:

• Develop a function list and requirements for this chair.
• Describe how this chair meets customer needs
• Develop a marketing plan based on the 4 P's
