MULTI-VOTING

This method helps the team reduce the number of candidates to be selected in a way that minimizes the influence of individual "champions."

For example, suppose a team of 10 people had to pick the most likely cause of a problem from a C/E diagram.

Step One:

List the potential causes in a vertical column. In this first round of voting, allow everyone to vote as many times as they wish, but only once for each item. Record the number of votes in the next column.

E 4

K 8
L 2

Step Two:

Select the top-half vote getters from the first round. Now vote a second time, but on only the winners. In this round, each person is allowed a total of only three votes. Allow discussion between each round.

Step Three:

Use only the top-half vote getters from round two for the third and final round. This time each person gets only one vote and should vote for the most likely cause of the problem.

The cause receiving the most votes in the last column is the one selected to be tried first as the most likely solution to the problem.
