Thank you for choosing to be a student in this course.

Welcome to QET 132/173 Metallurgy. These courses provides foundational knowledge that you will use in support of Strength of Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Design and Process Analysis and Product Design and Testing. In this course you will focus using mechanical tests (tensile, hardness, charpy impact tests) to characterize materials and then discover the impact of various mechanical and thermal processes and the impact of different levels of additives. This course also reinforces fundamental teamwork and meeting management skills. This course utilizes modules (Metallic Materials and Heat Treatment) developed at the National Center for Manufacturing Education with supportive content for the activities at http://www.ncmeresource.org/onsite/ . Additional, supportive materials are found in the supportive textbook and course outline links.

In this class you will be using the WebCT discussion board for questions and posting. There is a lot of "stuff" in this course, but with a lot of hands-on activities the content will be easier to learn.

Sincerely yours,

Jim Houdeshell

Background
This course has changed in both its content and delivery form throughout the past thirty years. The course content has evolved from its first offering in 1974. The course delivery modes over this same time period have changed from a "chalk and talk" classroom to a learning environment using hands-on, team based activities and the use of web-based course enhancements. This web based class mirrors that same progression with a greater emphasis on the use of Excel and MS Word and a significant amount of teamwork.
