EDGEWISE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CORRUGATED FIBERBOARD

By Glenna J. Wall

CHECK LIST

______1. Collect samples per ASTM D585

______2. Condition samples per ASTM D685

______3. SAMPLING AND TEST SPECIMENS

Obtain test sample in accordance with D685-93.

B Flute: 51+/- 0.08mm X 32+/- 1.6mm

C Flute: 51+/- 0.08mm X 38+/- 1.6mm

A Flute: 51+/- 0.08mm X 51+/- 1.6mm

Cut 10 samples. Put number or Id # on each sample.

______4. Dip each loading edge (long edge) into molten paraffin to a depth of _" and hold in the paraffin until it begins to migrate above the _" mark.

Normally a 3-second dip in 156° - 165° is satisfactory. If migration is rapid, you should reduce temperature.

______ 5. Immediately after dipping blot the edges on heated paper-toweling whish has been warmed to 171° F to 180° F.

______ 6. Measure width of each sample to nearest mm.

______ 7. Center sample on bottom platen

______ 8. Place guide block on each side of test sample so flutes are perpendicular to the platen, Blocks should be placed largest face up, with offset ends in contact

with sample.

______ 9. Apply compressive force.

______10. When load on sample is between 5 and 15 lbs. Remove guide blocks without altering platen movement, continue to apply pressure until the specimen fails

_______11. Record maximum load.

_______ 12. Clean platen between samples.
