Credit Hours: 2 Credits (One lecture, two laboratory hrs/week)  Date: August 24, 2001

 

Course Description:

The chemical, physical, and mechanical characteristics of paper products, glass, and plastics used as packaging materials. Extensive ASTM and TAPPI laboratory tests used, emphasis on creating documentation.

 Class Requirements:

Laboratory Final - 40%

Laboratory Reports -50%

Class Participation -10%

 Class Grading Scale:

90 to 100% - A
80 to 89% - B
70 to 79% - C
60 to 69% - D

Upon completion of this course each student will be able:
  • to summarize ASTM or Tappi standards and
  • to create checklistsand integrated documents that can be utilized in an ongoing laboratory setting.
  • to apply the concept of heirachy of instructions to integrate the appropriate standards.
  • to test paper and paperboard, corrugated and plastic films to the appropriate standards.
  • to apply the concepts of experimental design and statistical techniques to analysis of test results.

Students will be assigned a checklist(s) to audit versus the appropriate ASTM or TAPPI standard. A blank checksheet form can be obtained by linking to the checklist form.

Each week the class members will be assigned a standard to summarize and to create a draft operator checklist.

The final revised checklist will be submitted in both written and digital form.

Thr summary document will be produced and posted at the end of the quarter.
