Process Control: Authentic Learning Task 3 - Right on Raisin!

Background

In ALT#2 we learned about the most common attribute control chart the p chart. In this alt we will learn about a second group of attribute control charts based on the poisson distribution, the u and c charts. These charts are chosen when we have the possibility of more than one nonconformity in a part. For example, the number of blemishes per Xerox copied page (u chart) or number of water leaks found in an hour's production run in a truck asssembly at the water leak test booth (c chart).

In this activity you will be analyzing the number of raisins in a serving of Kellogg's Raisin Bran using a c chart.

For this activity you will need:

  1. a 20 or 25.5 oz. box of Kellogg's raisin bran (Post Raisin Bran will give different results),
  2. a cup measure, and
  3. a tray for sorting the raisins from the bran in each serving in order to perform a count.

This activity with it's instructions and data sheets is found in the Process Control Participant Journal pages 39 -45.
